Market Structure 101: Trends, Ranges and Transitions
A simple framework for reading any chart without a single indicator.
Price does three things: it trends, it ranges, and it transitions between the two. If you can label which one you are in, most of your trading decisions get simpler.
Trends
Higher highs and higher lows (uptrend) or lower highs and lower lows (downtrend). Trade pullbacks in the direction of the trend.
Ranges
Price oscillates between clear boundaries. Fade the edges or wait for a break and retest.
Transitions
The messy part. A trend fails to make a new extreme, structure breaks, and a range or reversal forms. This is where most losses happen — so this is where you trade smallest, or not at all.
Trading foreign exchange, futures, stocks, options and cryptocurrencies carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Past performance is not indicative of future results. All content is provided for educational purposes only and is not financial advice.
